Guide Introduction
Anyone can train in LaTale. Just pick up your weapon, find an enemy, and strike. However, there are certain techniques that can help you train better, and training better means faster leveling. If you’ve ever played an MMO like LaTale, you probably already know the great of this guide, but even so, you might learn a good thing or two. So are you ready to train effectively? Lets get to it!
Moving about the field
Anyone can figure out that the four arrow keys can let you move. But, there are some hidden techniques with moving that can help you maximize basic combat.
* Jumping: When you press a button, you jump. Sure, it may seem quite simple, but there’s a few tricks that can help you step up your game a little. The first thing you might realize about jumping is that if you do a slow jump (a jump from walking) you can grab onto ladders and ropes. Well, if you’re like me, you’re outraged because you can’t grab onto ladders and ropes while you perform a running jump (Running and them jumping). Well, you actually can, it just requires practice. When running to a ladder, jump so that the highest of your jump is where your character goes by the ladder/rope. Now, right before you pass the rope, make your character face the opposite way of the jump and press the UP button. So, if the ladder is on your right, and you’re jumping right, press the left arrow right before you get to the ladder, and press up as you’re going by the ladder. After a few tries, you’ll be able to catch the ladder or rope during a running jump. It doesn’t always work, but when it does, you’ll feel a lot happier knowing that you didn’t have to stop running, start walking, and do a slow jump to get on the ladder.
* Jump Attack: When you’re in midair, you can do a normal/heavy attack. Most of the time, it’s useless, but you can use it for other ways. When you’re on a platform below enemies, sometimes you can do a running jump and damage enemies above you, without taking a hit. This way you can train without getting hurt. Also, when enemies are on a platform next to you, and you can stand under, but next to them, you can jump attack them and they can’t hit you. Just remember to wait until after they attack before you jump again, or else they can knock you down and come after you.
* Run Training: While running, you can attack and continue running. While useless in normal training, you can perform these attacks to grouped enemies and continue running. So, if there’s a group of two or three enemies, run by and attack. Then, run back and attack again. Some enemies are too slow to attack back, so you can train without getting hurt.
Placing the enemy
Sometimes, enemies will stand on the edge of a platform, and one hit will knock them off. Other times, you’ll be surrounded by three or more enemies and can’t escape. Here are some tips.
* Pulling the enemy in: After you make your way into Elias, enemies will start attacking you before you attack them. This can be a little troublesome at first, since you can easily get surrounded. But, there are some ways to stop that from happening. If you see a group of enemies, inch towards them. Eventually, one will walk to you, instead of the whole group. Now take a few steps back and start attacking. This way you can not get surrounded, but continue training. If an enemy is near a ledge, walk up to them, then walk back once they start following you. This way when you hit them, they’ll be away from the ledge, and won’t fall off. This is VERY useful, since for some reason, if an enemy falls off a ledge, if you don’t start attacking it within a few seconds, and you eventually kill it, you will receive a fraction of the XP than you should. On an enemy that gives off 4000 XP, after knocking off a ledge I only received 550 XP.
* How to escape a group of enemies: Sometimes, you’ll be stuck taking blows from a group of enemies, with almost no time in between attacks to make it out. In this situation, you’ll probably end up dying, unless someone comes along and saves you. However, you can do a few things to get out of it. First, try using a skill. Skills cannot be interrupted, so if you keep getting knocked back and forth by enemies, using a skill will knock enemies back, giving you time to run-jump out of there. If that fails, you can use jumping to your advantage. Keep jamming the jump button until you finally manage to jump. Hopefully, an enemy will attack while you’re in air, and you’ll get thrown backwards. When you get up, run away from the group of enemies.
When to use Normal/Heavy attacks
Normal attacks and Heavy attacks are generally the same thing, except that Heavy attacks are a little slower, but hit harder. From what I’ve seen, a heavy attack will do about 170% of what a normal attack will do. However, there are times when you should use a normal and heavy attack.
* Normal Attacks: If you’re facing more than one enemy, and their attacks knock you back at least 25% of the time, this is the way to go. You’ll probably get more hits in using normal attacks than you would heavy, meaning you’ll do more damage using the weaker of the two attacks. Enemies that also move when attacking should also be easier if you use normal attacks, since heavy attacks can sometimes be so slow that the enemy can get behind you by the time you attack.
* Heavy Attacks: If you’re facing just one enemy, you can use heavy attacks, as long as the enemies attack doesn’t knock you back a lot. If the enemy misses a lot, use heavy attacks as well. If you’re facing a group of enemies and you can’t seem to be hitting as fast, use normal attacks instead.
Skills
In the beginning, skills don’t seem too good, since you probably don’t have a lot of SP to use them. As you begin to level up, they begin to be more useful. You can even start comboing your skills as well, when you get to a higher level.
* When to use skills: Skills will often help you defeat enemies faster than normal. If you’re just facing one enemy, and don’t have other enemies closing in, you can probably just stick to normal attacks. However, if you get grouped with a lot of enemies, using a skill will give you a second or two of a strong attack that won’t knock you back. If you’re facing a tough enemy that knocks you back, and attacks fast, skills will help you deal a lot of damage quickly.
* Linking Skills to normal attacks: If you use a skill, then do a normal attack, there’s almost no linkage between the two. However, if you use a normal/heavy attack, then use a skill, you’ll skip a noticeable amount of character frames. Basically, you’ll go from a normal attack right into a skill quickly and efficiently. This will help keep your combo, and will stun the enemies for a longer time.
* How to level up skills: Since you only get 1 Skill Point per level, deciding when to level up skills can be a little overwhelming. I would suggest getting at least 1 skill as soon as you can. When you unlock a skill, don’t put one point into it and leave it. Level it up as soon as you can, since extra points let you do more damage, but keeps the same SP cost. So you’re doing more damage for nothing. I don’t suggest leveling up one skill one level, then another the next. Level up one skill to the max ASAP, then go to the next.
* Skill Combos: As you get into higher levels, you can link skills together to keep your combo, do more damage, and give you more time where you cannot be knocked back. In the skill window, you should notice that below one skill, there’s another skill. That means that those two skills can form a combo. When you use one of the skills, right before it is finished, you should see “COMBO” flash in the other skill box on the keyboard at the top of the screen. If you press that key when it says COMBO, you’ll link the two skills together. You don’t get extra damage, but it does make you attack quicker and keeps your current hit combo up. Also note that you don’t have to use the weaker skill first, you can start off with the stronger skills and link them with the weaker. Also note that some skills cannot be combined.
Potion
If you’ve ever played another MMO, you’ll notice that potions work a little different in LaTale. Personally, I don’t like it, at all, but you’ll get used to it.
* How potions work: When you use a potion, you do NOT get the full effect instantly. Instead, you’ll get a portion of the effect about every second, for about five seconds. So, if a potion restores 100 HP, you’ll get a burst of 20 HP about five times in five seconds. Potions also have cool down times, which I’ve never seen in an MMO. After you use a potion, there will be a certain time before you can use another of the same potion. The time difference varies between potions. So, lets say you use an HP potion. You will have to wait about 10 seconds before you can use another HP potion. Even if it only takes 5 seconds to give out the entire effect of the potion, you’ll still have to wait another 5 seconds before you can use another HP potion, even though you’re not recovering HP.
* When to use potions: Potions can be pricey at first, so using them seems quite rediculous. The ONLY time you should use potions is when you NEED to, or if you’re trying to speed train. So, lets say you’re in combat and your HP is running low. Use an HP potion when your HP starts blinking, rather than waiting until you only have one hit til death. This way you won’t have to worry about evading attacks while the potion takes effect. If you’re speed training, don’t be afraid to use potions, just as long as you have the Ely to afford them.
* How to save up for potions: Doing quests is the best way to get Ely. Simple quests, such as the “Go die” quest can give you thousands of Ely. Sure, 2,000 Ely for one quest doesn’t seem like much, but when you complete 10 quests in half an hour, you’ve made 20,000 Ely. Some quests will pay more than 5,000 Ely when completed, and they are often re-doable. Also, make use of SITTING. If you’re buying weapons, talking to people, basically anything but training, SIT! You’ll recover about 1/25th of your Max HP/MP per second. So, if you have 30 seconds of idle time, you can refill your entire HP/MP bar.
* Which potions to use: You may notice that there are several types of certain potions. If you have 150 HP, don’t use potions that recover 160 HP. Potions work best if they cover around 50-75% of your total HP/MP. Recovering less than that can become dangerous, since you have a cooldown time on potions, and recovering more than that can be wasteful to your Ely.
Where to train
The XP system in LaTale is quite different than your normal MMO. While all enemies do have certain XP giveouts, it will change depending on your level. For instance, at level 5 an enemy can give out 500 XP. But, at level 10, it can give out 100 or lower.
* What to train on: The good thing about this XP system is that one kill off an enemy can tell you if it’s a good place to train. Since you cannot tell the exact amount of XP you need to level, you’ll have to go off of how much % an enemy gives off. If you’re killing enemies quickly, and you’re getting 1% per kill, you’re in a good training spot. However, if you’re getting 3% per kill, but are killing slowly and using a lot of potions, you should go to a weaker enemy. Even though the XP give off is less, you’ll probably be earning more out of a given time and spending less Ely on potions.
* Questing to Level: Quests don’t give out that great of an XP to help you level, since you can spend half an hour on a quest and the reward only gives you 1% of your level. However, you have to look at how much XP the enemies needed to kill for the quest give. For example, if you need to kill 50 of an enemy that gives off 1% per kill, you’ll earn 50% just by completing the quest. Then, when you obtain your reward, you’ll get even more XP. Questing is also good if you need a break from killing the same enemies over and over. You can also get useful rewards from quests as well.
In Conclusion
Hopefully this guide has taught you a few things about LaTale. It’s amazing how much time you can save by finding out what to train on, or the Ely you can save by spending your money on potions wisely.
